Escalation of Israel’s War on Gaza: The Humanitarian Impact and International Response

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has reached unprecedented levels of violence, with devastating consequences for the civilian population. The escalation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, drawing international condemnation and calls for immediate action. This article delves into the various attacks that have occurred, the humanitarian impact, and the statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

What Are the Recent Attacks and Their Impact?

Israeli forces have continuously conducted airstrikes on densely populated residential areas, hospitals, and humanitarian zones that have resulted in significant civilian casualties. In one recent instance, an attack on the Bureij refugee camp with men, women, and children, resulted in the deaths of several people and left many more injured. Despite international appeals, Israeli forces have continued to specifically target hospitals in Gaza. The Indonesian Hospital, one of the largest healthcare facilities in northern Gaza, has been heavily shelled, rendering it out of service and unsafe to inhabit. The ongoing bombardment has destroyed vital infrastructure, including water and power facilities, leaving the population without access to essential services.

How are Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities Affected?

The healthcare system in Gaza has essentially collapsed due to continuous attacks on hospitals and medical facilities. The World Health Organization has reported that in just one week, more than 11,000 cases of acute respiratory infection were reported. With little to no access to medical care and the deaths of hundreds of medical personnel and patients, the situation in Gaza is extremely dire. The destruction of hospitals has deprived the population of essential medical care, worsening the already-devastating humanitarian crisis with little hope for improvement due to Israel’s limitations on aid entering the Strip.

What has Netanyahu Said About the Conflict?

In his public appearances, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continued to take an aggressive stance on Israel’s war efforts despite the reports of widespread civilian suffering. During the UN General Assembly in September 2024, he emphasized the position that Israel will continue to fight until they have reached “total victory”—what that means is unclear, as Hamas has almost fully been operationally dismantled. In a recent statement, Netanyahu also claimed that the war could end if the group lays down its arms and returns Israeli hostages. He has also reiterated his rejection of a Palestinian state, stating that “Israel needs security control over all territory west of the Jordan River.”

What are the International Responses?

The international community has reacted strongly to the escalation of violence in Gaza. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have condemned the attacks and called for an immediate ceasefire. Amnesty International found that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Similarly, the International Court of Justice heard a case brought by South Africa alleging genocide. The case resulted in the decision that Israel’s occupation and presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal and should be stopped “as rapidly as possible.” Many countries, including Norway, Ireland, and Spain, have expressed their concerns and stated they will recognize a Palestinian state and urge both parties to engage in dialogue to resolve the conflict peacefully. The United States, under President Joe Biden, has emphasized the need for a two-state solution. However, with President-elect Donald Trump’s impending inauguration, a two-state solution seems far out of reach. During an interview, Trump stated, “there was a time when I thought two states could work. Now I think two states is going to be very, very tough.”

What is the Nature of the Relationship Between Trump and Netanyahu?

President-elect Donald Trump and President Benjamin Netanyahu have shared a close and cooperative relationship, particularly during Trump’s first term. This bond was marked by significant policy moves, such as the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the brokering of the Abraham Accords. With Trump’s election win, this relationship is expected to influence the Gaza conflict significantly. Trump’s support for Netanyahu’s hardline stance against Hamas and his emphasis on “finishing the job” in Gaza will likely lead to a continuation or further escalation of military action. This alliance may also impact international diplomatic efforts, as the Trump administration is likely to back Israel’s actions more robustly, potentially complicating peace negotiations and humanitarian responses.
