Vice Presidential Debate 2024: MENA Issues in Focus

On Tuesday, October 1, the 90-minute vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and J.D. Vance shed light on their contrasting approaches to many critical issues. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, is the Democratic VP candidate. He emphasized steady leadership and diplomatic efforts. In contrast, Vance, the junior senator from Ohio and Republican VP candidate, advocated for a more assertive and aggressive stance. Among the many issues discussed at the debate, Washington’s Middle East policy was predominantly featured, with the candidates outlining their visions for addressing the challenges in the region. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the MENA-related stances discussed.

How Should the U.S. Approach Its Foreign Policy on Iran?

The debate opened with Iran’s recent missile attack on Israel as both candidates faced the question: “Would you support or oppose a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran?” Neither directly answered the question. Instead, they used the opportunity to criticize each other’s running mates, former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, about their past approaches to confronting Iran.

Vance accused the Harris administration of providing Iran with over $100 billion in unfrozen assets, a claim that was fact-checked and found to be false. For example, former President Trump unilaterally exited the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2018, but recently stated that the U.S. must now enter diplomatic talks with Iran to avoid further consequences. Vance later argued that the financial support provided by the Harris administration made Iran stronger and contributed to the current crisis.

In contrast, Walz emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate. He also highlighted the importance of working with Washington’s international partners and allies to address the threat Iran poses and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Concluding his response, Walz stated that “our coalition is strong, and we need the steady leadership that Kamala Harris is providing.” Whilst upholstering the strength of the Harris administration, Walz readdressed how Trump and his administration’s form of diplomacy is fickle, and the US needs a strong leader who is level-headed in their leadership.

How to Approach the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

When asked, Walz briefly stated that it is important to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also explained in depth that it is equally as important for Israel to be able to defend itself, asserting that “the expansion of Israel and its proxies is an absolute, fundamental necessity for the United States to have steady leadership there.” Vance also emphasized the need for humanitarian aid and supporting affected populations, but the candidates differed in their approach to providing assistance.

Walz emphasized the importance of international cooperation while Vance focused on the need for security and stability. Vance argued for maintaining a strong military presence in the region to deter aggression from other state and non-state actors while Walz focused on security and stability through diplomacy.

Over 1,100 people in Israel and 42,500 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, 2023.
