War to Ceasefire: Navigating the Israel-Palestine Conflict

Why has the Israel-Palestine conflict been ongoing?

The Israel-Palestine conflict has deep historical roots dating back to the early 20th century, when tensions arose between the growing Jewish and existing Arab populations in the region. The creation of the State of Israel and subsequent Arab-Israeli War in 1948 led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from the land. In the following decades, multiple wars, intifadas (uprisings), and failed attempts at peace have exacerbated the situation. Key issues fueling the conflict include disputes over borders, the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees’ right of return, and mutual recognition. The lack of trust and recurring violence have made it challenging to reach a lasting resolution, resulting in a prolonged cyclical conflict that continues to affect millions of lives.

What led to the ceasefire agreement?

The conflict, being one of the most enduring and complex disputes in modern history, has seen numerous escalations and ceasefires over the decades. The most recent ceasefire agreement, approved on January 15, 2025, comes after 15 months of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas. This agreement aims to bring much-needed relief to the people of Gaza, allow for the exchange of prisoners and hostages, and facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid in the Strip. The ceasefire also marks a significant diplomatic achievement, involving international mediators who helped broker the deal.

How many hostages are involved and how are they being released?

The ceasefire agreement involved the release of 33 Israeli hostages held by Hamas, including three American-Israeli hostages. The first phase of the agreement saw the release of three Israeli hostages—Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari. They were transported from Gaza to the Red Cross for the exchange. In return, Israel has released 90 Palestinian prisoners. The process is being facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross to ensure the safety and well-being of those involved. The remaining hostages will be released in later phases, with careful monitoring by international observers to ensure compliance from both sides.

What challenges remain?

Despite the ceasefire, significant challenges remain. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with extremely limited access to food, clean water, electricity, and shelter. The United Nations has emphasized the need for a complete cessation of hostilities and uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza. Additionally, the reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes pose significant challenges. The psychological trauma endured by civilians also requires long-term support and efforts to rebuild their communities.

Long-term implications depend on the commitment of both parties to uphold the terms of the ceasefire. In order to work towards a resolution, addressing the root causes of the conflict, including territorial disputes and political recognition, is essential for achieving a sustainable and lasting peace. The international community’s role in facilitating and monitoring the ceasefire will be crucial in maintaining peace and stability to work towards a solution.

How will Donald Trump’s presidency impact the ceasefire?

Trump’s time in office is expected to have a significant impact on the ceasefire and conflict at large. His administration has taken a firm stance on securing the release of hostages held by Hamas, with Trump himself issuing threats to “unleash hell” if the hostages were not freed before his inauguration. This position played a role in the negotiations, while the Trump administration is expected to continue American support for Israel.

With Trump returning to office, his relationship with President Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to continue to play a significant role in U.S.-Israel relations. Netanyahu has expressed optimism about working with Trump again, predicting that the “best days” of the alliance are ahead.
